DOF Reality – H3 Motor Gearbox Upgrade

Motion simulator systems for consumers have come a long way in the past few years. While there was a time they were virtually unaffordable for home use, the popularity and with it the growth of the sim racing community has created a market for less expensive offerings.

One might still call motion a costly addition compared to most sim racing hardware, and frankly, some systems still cost an arm and a leg. The good news is that there now are a few brands offering very affordable motion systems without compromising the quality of the products.

One of the brands that design and market a great value-for-money motion system is DOF Reality based in Champlain, New York, USA. The company offers a selection of well-built, light-weight and easy to assemble motion platforms for both the PC and Consoles. (Optional MagicBox is needed for console support)

The product list includes a 2 DOF (Pitch + Roll) Seat mover, 2 DOF (Pitch + Roll) Chassis, 3 DOF (Pitch + Roll + Yaw/Rear Traction), and a 6 DOF (Pitch, Roll, Yaw, Surge, Sway, Heave) platform. With exception of the seat mover which supports a user weight of 330 lbs/150 kg, all DOF Reality chassis can handle a total weight of 440 lbs/200 kg. Due to the modular design, the individual DOF Reality platforms are also upgradeable to a higher product range.

Regardless of the quest to deliver a lower-cost motion platform, DOF Reality is constantly innovating and improving its designs. Last year, the company introduced its new innovative SFU (Standard Flange Unit) ball-screw gearboxes which reduce motor loads and eliminate play in the gearbox providing extremely smooth motions. The use of an SFU gearbox also increases the motion range by 25-100% depending on the system of choice and allows DOF Reality to offer motion monitor mounts for its systems.

The SFU gearbox system is now included on all the DOF Reality P models and the H6 platform. The remaining models can be optionally upgraded with a kit that replaces the existing gearboxes with an SFU setup while keeping the same motors and sensors.
