DSD introduces the FunStick Junior

It’s not the first time Derek Speare Designs introduces a Sim Racing shifter unit. With in-house manufactured models such as the Short Throw Pro Sequential and the DSD Pro Sequential, it can be said that Derek has some experience building a quality shifter.

Because most shifter units are custom build they do come at a price. Keeping in mind that not all Sim Racers have the same budget, Derek Speare Designs decided to come up with a quality product while keeping the production cost low.   DSD decided to make use of the latest 3D printing technology. By manufacturing as many parts as possible by use of a 3D SLS printer the overall cost would go down while reproduction would become allot easier.

With this in mind, DSD introduces a potential new Sequential Shifter named “Funstick Junior”. The shifter will feature parts that are made using a 3D SLS Printer. (SLS – Selective Laser Sintering) DSD is planning to market this “Ready to use” product for less than $300.

Derek Speare Designs Quote:

“In addition to putting it out there as a production component, it may come to pass that the “Funstick” will be an Open Source effort where we offer up the parts kit to build it and those who have a 3D printer or use a service can print their own and build it at home as it’s surprisingly simple. This is as much of a proof-of-concept component as it is a finished and ready-to-use one. (and the name is simply a placeholder until it gets a “real one”)

BTW, I’ll let the cat out of the bag and say that it would be fun to do a 3d printed handbrake and a set of 3d printed pedals. We use a lot of 3d printing to make prototypes from ABS type plastic as well as from steel to make tools and production parts. 3D printing is to production, prototyping and manufacturing as VR/Oculus Rift is to gaming. 3D printing especially gives makers of goods for the sim racing world opportunities to make components that would otherwise be absurdly expensive from more traditional processes.”
