iRacing with the Oculus Rift DK2

GamerMuscle continues his quest following up on the Oculus Rift implementation on various Sim Racing titles. This time he fires up iRacing and jumps in the Lotus 79 doing a few laps on Road America.

GamersMuscle’s first impressions are good, with everything working as expected. The menus all work fine, and because of the optimized performance of the iRacing engine, frame rates are more than acceptable. While the Oculus Rift DK2 experience is more immersive than your average 2D screen session, it has to be pointed out that at this moment in time the resolution, and quality of the VR screens are below the minimum requirements to become a replacement for the common screen setup. So don’t throw away you triple screen rig just yet.

Oculus VR already revealed its next step towards a consumer-ready version of their VR headset. The DK3 is supposed to have a better and lower-latency display. It will support 360-degree head tracking and the weight will be reduced for improved comfort.  Furthermore, the set will feature integrated headphones with 3D audio support. The DK3 is rumored to have a resolution of 1440p or higher, further minimizing the somewhat annoying screen door effect. At this time, there is no exact released date known.
