Live For Speed

Is Live For Speed still alive? (Video by GamerMuscle)

Those of you who have been Sim Racing for a few years will undoubtably be familiar with Live for Speed, or LFS in short. This realistic racing simulator is developed by a small developers team. Scawen Roberts, Eric Bailey, and Victor van Vlaardingen released their first commercial version of LFS on June 24, 2005.

Live for Speed can easily be called a mature Simulator. With tyres, suspension, aerodynamics, drivetrain, gearbox types, clutch overheating, car body damage, and engine damage. The tyre model features dynamic wear, dynamic dirt, flat spots, hot spots and tyre wall deformation. Even by todays next gen standards it is impressive to say the least. The Sim features Touring cars, open wheelers, Rally cross cars and road vehicles. For licencing reasons, a selection of cars and tracks are fictional, yet very recognisable.

While development slowed down the last few years, the development team has picked up the work tempo lately. With the latest patch, Live for Speed now supports 3D devices, including 3D TVs, headsets, projectors and the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

If there is one simulator that scores high as far as value for money is concerned, it must be LFS. I remember spending hours having fun with numerous Sim Racers around the world.  One of the people that also had a weak spot for LFS is GamerMuscle. With the latest patch released, GamersMuscle fires up LFS and talks about the past and future of this simulator.
