Microsoft Announces new Gaming Console – Project Scorpio
During their E3 press conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft has revealed that they are working on a new game console code-named Project Scorpio. Microsoft calls it “the most powerful console ever build”. The new console will be purpose built towards gaming in a 4K resolution and virtual reality. The new console is scheduled to be available by the end of 2017.
As previously rumored, the console will output 6 teraflops of computing power, making it four times as powerful as the Xbox One which generates 1,32tflops. The console will use an eight-core CPU and memory with a bandwidth of 320GB / s.
The Scorpio console will be fully backward compatible and therefore be able to run all the existing Xbox One games. Because of the more powerful hardware, Xbox One games will perform better and will run in 108p at a solid 60fps. VR will be a significant part of project Scorpio but Microsoft did not yet reveal its official VR partner.
Microsoft also confirmed that the Scorpio console will support all existing Xbox One accessories, meaning that the current Xbox compatible steering wheels and pedal sets will be supported straight out of the box. Scorpio will compete directly with Sony’s new upcoming high-end PlayStation, codenamed Neo.
Aa the press conference, Microsoft also showed the new Xbox One S which is a smaller version of the current Xbox One featuring some upgrades like 4K video playback (No 4K games). The Xbox One S should be in the stores by August.
