Via its social media channels, iRacing teased a picture of the two Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) cars already available for the online racing service, accompanied by two vehicles yet to be revealed.
You would think that guessing what is under the covers is not a difficult task, taking into account that the iRacing post clearly states it’s all about IMSA GTP content.
The BMW M Hybrid V and the Cadillac V-Series.R are already available in the sim. That only leaves the Porsche 963 (Type 9R0) and the Acura ARX-06 as contenders in the 2023 IMSA Gran Touring Prototype class.
The original IMSA GTP class was a former classification designated to sports prototypes in sports car racing competing in the IMSA GT Championship, maintained by IMSA between 1981 and 1993. The early cars were based on the almost same identical ruleset as the FIA’s Group C category, but eventually evolved into a separate category. It was the successor to the Grand Touring Experimental (GTX) class, which were based on FIA Group 5 and Group 6 cars.
For 2023, the IMSA GTP class was revived as the top class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The new GTP class is based on the Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh) platform, which is a joint venture between IMSA and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO). The LMDh platform is designed to be a cost-effective and technologically advanced alternative to the LMH class, which is the top class in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
