Official BTCC Racing Game Coming In 2022
Somewhat older Sim Racers with a soft spot for Touring Cars will without a doubt remember the very popular TOCA Touring Car Game Series by Codemasters which could be considered as one of the most fun racing games/simulators of its time.
Back in August 2019, we reported that it was rumored we might see a new TOCA racing game appear featuring British Touring Car Championship content, as Alan James Gow who is the Director and Administrator of the British Touring Car Championship had hinted that they would support the opportunity to relaunch the classic TOCA Touring Cars video game.
In May of this year, three-time British Touring Car Championship champion Matt Neal who is currently a driver of the Halfords Yuasa Racing team Honda Civic Type R confirmed the rumor that such a game is in development during a Facebook lockdown live session by Team Dynamics Motorsport.
Today the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) which can be regarded as Great Britain’s top Touring Car Series, officially announced a partnership with Motorsport Games that will lead to the release of a licensed BTCC racing game and eSports racing series in 2022.
Motorsport Games is a division of the international Motorsport Network with its headquarters in Silverstone UK.
Their Games’ roster of products includes the NASCAR Heat video game franchises and eSports events such as the recent 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual ( rFactor2), eNASCAR Heat Pro League, The World Rallycross Esports Series (DiRT Rally 2.0), ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge (rFactor 2), #NotTheGP series ( F1 2019) and the Le Mans Esports Series (Forza Motorsport 7).
Motorsport Games will develop the official BTCC game for the new generation consoles, as well as the PC, and are also investigating the option to develop a mobile version of the game.
The BTCC game is said to feature all the cars, teams, drivers, and circuits of the official BTCC championship.
Alan Gow, BTCC Chief Executive, said: “Finally, I’m proud to say that the huge demand from the BTCC and TOCA game fans is being answered. Just like the original BTCC/TOCA game, this will be a dedicated BTCC game featuring all the cars, all the teams, all the drivers and all the circuits – not merely some elements partially incorporated into an existing game.
“It is hugely important to me, our teams, drivers and fans that any new BTCC game reflected exactly what everyone loves about our championship; the incredibly close non-stop action, intense competition and great enjoyment. I’ve no doubt that Motorsport Games will deliver exactly that.”
Stephen Hood, President of Motorsport Games, commented: “This partnership is a clear signal of the enormous trust that the BTCC has placed in Motorsport Games. Our team demonstrated real enthusiasm for the project from day one, and our ambitions were immediately aligned. The opportunity is clear for all to see and we look forward to deploying the significant and proven capabilities of our esports, game development and media teams to return this series back to the forefront of gaming.”
On the new prospect of the new BTCC game, Motorsport Games’ Creative Director, Paul Coleman, said: “There is a clear demand and appetite for a new touring car game, and we are delighted that we are going to make that a reality. Many of the staff in our studio have fond memories of the TOCA game series and my first job in the games industry was actually working on TOCA Race Driver 2 as a QA Tester. We have some exciting plans that we cannot wait to reveal.”
