R3E Chevrolet Monza Dekon revealed
Last week, Sector3 already revealed a small snippet of a mystery car that was soon to be available for RaceRoom Racing Experience. Showing a screenshot that revealed just a small section of the window, it was up to the R3E community to guess what car it represented. Amazingly, a community member already hit the jackpot in the first few minutes.
So here it is. Sector3 proudly presents the Chevrolet Monza Dekon that will become part of the R3E Group 5 Class of cars. Together with the upcoming Fabcar 935 the R3E community will get their hands on two classic IMSA GT cars.
Chevrolet Monza’s participated in the IMSA GT Series powered by Chevrolet Corvette engines. The most successful and recognized of all the H07 silhouette Monza GT racecar builders was DeKon Engineering, LTD. The company was formed in July 1974 by Lee Dykstra and Horst Kwech. The name DeKon is a concatenation of the D in Dykstra and the K in Kwech. With the help of Chevrolet, the Illinois tuner produced seventeen racecars in three years time. Of these, fourteen were Chevrolet Monza’s.
The Dekon Monza featured a tubular frame chassis, an overall weight of about 2,400 pounds, and over 600 horsepower from a fuel-injected V-8 engine. The cars were very fast and competitive, thanks in part to their excellent 50/50 weight distribution. Engines used were heavily modified Chevrolet 5.7-6.0 L V8 small-blocks, normally aspirated, some using four Weber (2V) downdraft carburetion. They developed as much as 650 horsepower.
The car competed in the All-American Grand Touring (AAGT) class from 1975-1986. The DeKon modified Chevrolet Monza won the IMSA GT championships in 1976, 1977 and 1978.
