In line with the TCR regulations, the Volkswagen Motorsport GTI TCR is powered by a 1,984 ccm Four-cylinder engine with exhaust turbocharger and intercooling. The engine delivers around 350 hp at 6,200 rpm. All that power is transferred to the front wheels via a six-gear sequential or direct-shift gearbox (DSG) which is operated by gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

The FIA World Touring Car Cup, also known as the FIA WTCR presented by Oscaro is an international touring car championship promoted by Eurosport Events and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The 2018 World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) takes over from the World Touring Car Championship and adopts the TCR technical regulations, though it will be the 14th overall season of the series that dates from the 2005 World Touring Car Championship.

The change of name and new rules follow the declining interest in the TC1 regulations used by the World Touring Car Championship between 2014 and 2017 and the growing interest among manufacturers in the TCR touring car category.
