The BMW M3 Sport Evolution was the last, and most potent, of the evolution models spawned by the 1986-launched E30 M3. It was introduced by BMW M to homologate the 1990 version of its Group A racing car, cementing the marque’s burgeoning reputation on the touring car circuit. In fact, the racer would perform even better than its makers could have dared hope, establishing itself as a motorsport legend.
The Sport Evolution’s existence was due to a 1990 touring car regulation change that permitted 2.5-liter engines. The 235-bhp straight-four S14B25 EVO 3 that brought the new car to life was capable of taking it to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and to a top speed of 154 mph.
However the 600 front-engine, rear-wheel-drive homologation specials that subsequently rolled off BMW’s production lines didn’t trade on brute force alone to attract buyers—they also inherited the lightweight build and responsive handling that had made their fabled predecessors so immensely popular.
