Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII Released. |
The eighth generation of Mitsubishi’s ultra-successful high-performance car was released in 2003. When the first generation had been in production way back in the early 1990s the decision had been made to only supply the "Evo" to the Japanese market. However unprecedented international interest and sustained demand in the "gray import" sector forced the company to rethink its strategy. Prompted by the stateside success of its main rival, the Subaru Impreza WRX , the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII therefore became the first "Evo" to be officially sold in the US, more than a decade after the car had initially rolled off the production lines. Although Mitsubishi was forced to downgrade some of its features in order to comply with US emissions and safety laws, the Evo VIII retained its turbocharged two-liter inline four-cylinder engine and full-time all-wheel-drive powertrain. This high-performance MR model, which was introduced to North America in 2005, also sports the 17-inch BBS alloys, slick-response Bilstein shocks, and six-speed manual gearbox found on its peers in other markets around the world.
