McLaren M23 released. |
Raced by McLaren ‘s Formula One team between 1973 and 1977, the M23 replaced the M19 , which had led them to two top-three finishes in the Constructors’ Championship in the early 1970s. However rather than being based on its predecessor as so often happens with F1 cars, the M23 actually shared more DNA with the 1972 Indianapolis 500-winning M16, which itself had taken some design cues from the pioneering Lotus 72 Formula One car. The potent combination of its M16-derived wedge-shape design and the ubiquitous 490-bhp Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 that powered it helped secure three wins for the M23 in the 1973 season, placing drivers Peter Revson and Denny Hulme 5th and 6th in the Drivers’ Championship and ensuring McLaren ended its third straight season in third place in the Constructors’ Championship.
