McLaren MP4-27 Released.

The McLaren MP4-27 carried the British team’s hopes for 2012, setting out to improve on the Constructors’ Championship runners-up spots achieved by the MP4-25 and MP4-26 .

Before the season started, it had already won its first battle: the distinction of being the prettiest car on the grid. Due a reduction in permitted nose height, most of its rivals had resorted to incorporating a stepped, "platypus" nose that interrupted their flowing lines, but the McLaren designers had managed to avoid that undignified fate, preferring instead to stick with a more conventional conk.

Although not immediately obvious, the design of the MP4-27 diverged markedly from its predecessor. The most obvious change involved the scrapping of the pioneering U-shaped sidepods sported by the MP4-26—a change resulting from another newly-introduced regulation.

By the first race of the season, it was becoming obvious that the MP4-27 was more than just a pretty face, with Button and Hamilton taking first and third place. Three further podium finishes for the British pair in the next two races also suggested the future would be bright for McLaren in 2012.
